You don't need knockdown to do it because it has the trip trait. Knockdown is a special 2 action move that lets you make a trip with any 2 hand weapon if the strike hits. I do not believe that having feats that people are generally going to want to take if they are playing a grappler in the grappler archetype is bad design or design against the core foundations of the game itself.
