With an axe you first need to destroy the metal wire that fixes the door to the frame, that will turn the gate into a fence which can further be destroyed with an axe/sledgehammer or ... Then add 2 Logs on top of the Fence Kit. Afterward, pick up your Shovel and select the Build Base option. Then take your Planks and Attach them to the Gate of your base in DayZ. Pick up the Hammer and select Build Lower Frame after you Attach Nails to the Gate. Then follow the same steps again and select Build Upper Frame.

It’s dependent on how you place and not which side you’re standing on when you’re actually building the parts of the fence. But yes, you’d either have to place it from the inside or stand outside and rotate the fence kit before placing it. It only actually lets you build from the inside part of the fence so you’ll know if you messed up.
